Bayelsa Is Home, Declares Chief of Air Staff Aneke

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, on Wednesday March 4, 2026 described his return to Bayelsa State as a emotional homecoming, reminiscing about his previous posting as Air Officer Commanding (AOC) of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Mobility Command in Yenagoa.

Air Marshal Aneke, who led a delegation of senior NAF officers on a courtesy visit to Governor Douye Diri at the Government House, Yenagoa waxed philosophically and likening his journey to that of a son who ventures out to achieve greatness only to return home for celebration and homage.

“As a son of Bayelsa — at least in spirit — I am here to pay homage where I received elevation to the position of Chief of the Air Staff,” Aneke stated.

He emphasized that Bayelsa holds a special place in his heart, beyond its strategic national importance.

“This state has been privileged to produce several service chiefs. In the Air Force alone, three or four former AOCs here have risen to the top echelon,” he noted.

Reflecting on his earlier service in the state, Aneke highlighted the resilience, hospitality, and patriotism of Bayelsans.

“I witnessed these qualities first-hand. This visit is not just official; it is deeply personal — a reunion with a community and family I hold in high esteem, Your Excellency.”

The CAS explained that the visit formed part of his nationwide operational tour of NAF units and theatres. He aimed to assess personnel readiness, evaluate security efforts, bolster civil-military ties, and safeguard lives and critical national assets.

He also used the occasion to express gratitude to Governor Diri for the state’s support and cooperation with the NAF.

Additionally, Aneke disclosed that he was in Bayelsa to inaugurate and formally hand over a training facility constructed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to the Nigerian Air Force.

In response, Governor Diri warmly received the CAS, congratulating him on his appointment and praising his integrity during his earlier tenure in the state.

“You served with distinction, synergising with the government and the people of Bayelsa. We have no doubt you are one of our own and a true ambassador of the state,” Diri said.

The governor observed that Bayelsa has proven a fertile ground for military promotions, particularly for officers who serve creditably.

“Biologically you may hail from elsewhere, but we regard you as a gentleman from Bayelsa. Others coming here should note that this is a fertile ground for advancement in the military.”

Diri reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with the NAF Mobility Command and other military formations, crediting them for contributing to peace and security in the state.

He assured sustained support for all military outfits in Bayelsa.
