Ruggedman’s Era Was The Worst- Dandizzy

A short video of rapper DanDizzy speaking with veteran artist Ruggedman has stirred up a fresh wave of arguments across Nigeria’s music community, reopening the old conversation about how much the pioneers really did for the culture. The clip, which spread quickly on social media earlier today, shows DanDizzy calmly telling Ruggedman that artists from his generation “were the worst” when it came to building a structure the next wave could stand on.

The comment didn’t come from a place of disrespect, at least not in the way many people expected. DanDizzy backed his point with the argument that the early 2000s rappers had the numbers, fame, and influence, but didn’t translate that attention into anything lasting. According to him, the new wave is still trying to build systems that should have existed long before now: stronger labels, better touring culture, real publishing knowledge, and proper industry support for rappers.

Ruggedman didn’t let it slide. He reminded DanDizzy that their era operated with almost no digital tools, limited corporate funding, and an industry still trying to find its feet. To him, comparing both periods is unfair because young artists today are benefiting from platforms the old generation never had access to. The back-and-forth was brief, but enough to set the internet ablaze.

Reactions have been mixed. Some younger fans agree with DanDizzy, saying the pioneers enjoyed the hype but didn’t create opportunities for anyone coming behind them. Others have accused DanDizzy of rewriting history, insisting that Ruggedman and his peers pushed hip-hop into the mainstream at a time when the country barely paid attention.

Whatever side people fall on, the exchange has forced a wider conversation about legacy, responsibility, and what it really means to build an industry that lasts. And as more artists weigh in, it’s clear this debate won’t die down anytime soon.
