Rivers Leaders Unite in Port Harcourt, Talks

In a significant step toward political harmony, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara convened with prominent elders and lawmakers in Port Harcourt on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

The gathering, hosted by the Rivers State Elders Council, included key figures such as Council Chairman Chief Ferdinand Alabraba and House of Assembly Speaker Martins Amaewhule, along with other influential stakeholders.

Photos from the closed-door session surfaced on Sunday morning, October 5, 2025, via a post on X by Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media. Olayinka described the event as a clear sign of reconciliation, noting, “The political family is fully united.”

It is worth noting that this meeting follows a turbulent period in Rivers State politics. On March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu imposed a six-month state of emergency to address escalating tensions between state factions. The measure ended with Fubara’s official reinstatement as governor on September 18, 2025, paving the way for efforts to restore stability.

While specifics of the discussions remain private, the assembly underscores a commitment to collaborative governance. Observers view it as a positive development amid ongoing recovery from the emergency rule, which had disrupted legislative and executive functions.

The Rivers State Elders Council, known for mediating internal disputes, played a central role in facilitating the dialogue. No official communiqués were released immediately after the meeting, but the shared imagery and Olayinka’s optimistic commentary suggest progress in mending divisions.

It bears mentioning that this reunion highlights broader national pushes for unity under President Tinubu’s administration, especially in resource-rich regions like the Niger Delta. As Rivers State moves forward, such engagements could bolster economic and social initiatives, ensuring smoother operations for residents.
