Youth Council’s Seminar Sparks Movement for Safer Okrika

In a time when Nigerian youths face increasing social pressures and diminishing guidance, the seminar organized by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Okrika Chapter, on Friday, September 26, could not have come at a better moment. Focused on the theme “Creating a Safe Society in Okrika Local Government,” the initiative directly addressed the most pressing challenges confronting youths in Wakirike-Bese.

This wasn’t just another talk-shop. It was a thoughtful, proactive approach to empowering young people with the tools they need to thrive, not just survive, in today’s complex society.

Topics like drug abuse, early childbirth, youth development, and indecent dressing were not only timely but also critical. Each of these issues continues to threaten the growth, potential, and safety of our youth.

The discussion on drug abuse, for instance, was especially pertinent in a time when substance misuse is silently destroying many promising lives. By highlighting the dangers and offering alternatives, the seminar gave attendees a path toward making informed and healthy life choices. Equally important were the sessions on stress management and resisting peer pressure, which offered real-world strategies for young people to cope with life’s demands.

One of the standout sessions was the workshop on indecent dressing. In many communities, including Okrika, clothing choices have social, cultural, and legal implications. Rather than shaming or condemning, this workshop created a safe space for open dialogue.

It gave young people a chance to reflect on how they present themselves and what that means in terms of self-respect, confidence, and societal perception. In a community where indecent dressing carries legal consequences, this session was both relevant and necessary.

It offered clarity and empowerment, helping youths make decisions that align with both their personal values and the laws of their land.

It’s important to emphasize that this seminar was not about control; it was about empowerment. It was about giving young people the awareness, skills, and confidence to make choices that protect their futures and uplift their communities.

The positive ripple effect of such interventions can be significant, fostering a new generation of responsible and resilient citizens.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Okrika Chapter, deserves high commendation for this initiative. In organizing this impactful event, they’ve demonstrated a commitment not only to the well-being of today’s youth but also to the future of Okrika itself.

Community safety and development begin with informed and empowered citizens. This seminar laid the groundwork for just that.

In a world often quick to criticize young people, this effort to engage, educate, and uplift them is refreshing—and necessary. Let’s hope this is just the beginning of more youth-centered programs aimed at building a stronger, safer, and more hopeful society.
