Google has utilized the Chrome browser as a powerful instrument to enhance and reinforce its search engine supremacy for many years. The company is now preparing to replicate this success with artificial intelligence.
On Thursday, Google revealed that it is enhancing Chrome with a range of AI features aimed at making browsing more interactive, automated, and personalized. This revamp signifies the dawn of a new era for one of Google’s key products, as the organization pivots its business towards AI-driven search and productivity.
Among the most immediate enhancements, Google is incorporating AI Mode, its conversational alternative to conventional search, directly into Chrome’s “omnibox,” the address bar where users input web queries. This modification enables users to initiate AI-powered searches without navigating away from their current webpage.
This initiative is part of a larger transformation of Google Search into an AI-first product. Parisa Tabriz, the vice president of Google Chrome, characterized the updates as “fundamentally changing the nature of browsing” in a blog post that announced the improvements.

Google also embeds its Gemini AI assistant directly into the browser. Previously available only to paying subscribers, this tool will now be accessible for free to all Chrome users. Gemini can “see” everything on the active webpage, access content across various open tabs, and respond to inquiries in real time.
Importantly, Gemini will also retain a history of previously visited pages and connect with other Google services like YouTube and Google Calendar indicating Google’s strategy to establish a cohesive AI ecosystem across its offerings.
One of the most notable updates is the introduction of AI agents within Chrome — autonomous systems designed to execute complex tasks on behalf of users. Google’s agent, which was previewed last year under the codename “Project Mariner,” has undergone significant upgrades.
