The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has met with Border Patrol Commanders, urging them to step up efforts to secure the nation’s borders against external threats.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Force Public Relations Officer in a statement posted on the police’s official social media handles on Friday, September 12.
According to Hundeyin Egbetokun said this during a conference held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The 61-year-old emphasised the crucial role of the commanders as Nigeria’s first line of defence, stressing their responsibility to protect the country’s sovereignty and prevent bloodshed.
The Ogun-born acknowledged the vast and complex nature of Nigeria’s borders, including its long maritime corridors, and praised the efforts of the Force Border Patrol unit in combating cross-border crime.
The Mathematics graduate of the University of Lagos, Akoka, called for a shift toward modern policing, stating that “the Nigeria Police Force cannot tackle 21st-century crimes with 20th-century tools.”

To this end, he advocated for the adoption of technology, such as surveillance systems, drones, and biometric scanners, to outpace criminal elements.
Egbetokun, who received a postgraduate diploma in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University in 2000 highlighted the importance of an intelligence-led approach, building community trust, and fostering collaboration with other security agencies.
He also assured the commanders that the welfare of police personnel remains a top priority under his leadership.
The IGP tasked the commanders to remain vigilant in preventing criminal activities at the borders, reaffirming the police force’s commitment to securing the nation and its people.
The meeting underscored a renewed focus on strengthening Nigeria’s border security in the face of evolving challenges.
