Nigeria Students Turn to AI for Study Support as Reopen – Google

As schools resume across Nigeria, a fresh wave of students is increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to enhance their learning experience, according to recent data from Google Search trends.

The technology giant disclosed on Tuesday that searches combining “AI + studying” have surged by over 200% compared to the previous year, highlighting a growing reliance on AI tools not just for curiosity, but as active study aids. Nigerian students are exploring AI tutors, free educational resources, and customized prompts to assist in various subjects.

Breaking down the trend by discipline, Google’s data shows a 50% increase in searches for “AI + chemistry,” while “AI + maths” and “AI + languages” each saw a 30% uptick. Additionally, inquiries about AI’s role in grammar rose by 20%. Common search questions included “What is the best AI for solving math problems?” and “How to use AI to solve math problems,” signaling a practical approach toward AI-assisted learning.

Olumide Balogun, Google’s West Africa Director, remarked that Nigerian students are leveraging AI not merely to find quick answers but to deepen their comprehension of challenging subjects. He emphasized Google’s commitment to providing innovative tools that help learners thrive academically.

Interest in AI extends beyond academic subjects. Searches such as “how to use AI” and “what is the full meaning of AI” climbed by 80%, while curiosity about AI’s origins, seen in queries like “who is the father of AI,” increased by 70%.

Another notable surge was a 290% rise in searches for “AI detection,” reflecting an active dialogue on the ethical use of AI and academic honesty. Career-related queries are also gaining momentum, with “Generative AI” emerging as a popular search term, often linked with “professional certification,” suggesting young Nigerians are preparing for AI-driven job markets.

Overall, Google’s findings reveal a significant national trend, with AI-related searches reaching an all-time high in Nigeria in 2025, marking a 60% growth within the year. This data underscores the transformative role AI is playing in education and career planning for Nigerian students.
