Kelechi Iheanacho Joins Celtic

After a contentious transfer deadline day, Celtic has brought in Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho, a move that manager Brendan Rodgers is confident will silence critics.

Rodgers, who previously managed Iheanacho at Leicester City, believes the 28-year-old will be a valuable asset to the team, highlighting his talent, athleticism, and strong work ethic.

He also noted that Iheanacho is in the prime of his career, which should allow him to make a significant impact.

Iheanacho joins Celtic on a one-year deal as a free agent, with the club securing his signing just before the Europa League registration deadline.

This comes a day after his contract with Spanish club Sevilla was mutually terminated.

The signing addresses a key concern for supporters, who had voiced their frustration over the club’s inability to sign a replacement for Adam Idah on transfer deadline day.

The club faced a backlash after selling Idah to Swansea City without a new striker lined up, leading to outrage from fan groups, including the Affiliation of Celtic Supporters Clubs.

The group publicly demanded an explanation from chief executive Michael Nicholson for the “disarray witnessed on the final evening of the transfer window.”

Despite the controversy, Rodgers stands by the signing of Iheanacho, stating he believes the forward will thrive at Celtic and that fans will appreciate his contributions.

Iheanacho’s career includes stints at Manchester City, where he won the League Cup, and Leicester City, where he secured an FA Cup winner’s medal.

He also helped Nigeria reach the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His most recent club was Sevilla, though he spent the latter part of last season on loan at Middlesbrough.

Iheanacho has earned 59 caps for the Nigerian national team.
