Diri Rewards Officer For Rejecting Bribe As Bayelsa Police Arrest Abductors Of High Court Judge

The Bayelsa State Police Command says it has apprehended the individuals responsible for the kidnapping of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court.

The judge was abducted on June 21 in Yenagoa and held captive for 12 days before being rescued through a coordinated effort by security agencies.

Diri announced the development on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, during the state executive council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa.

The governor also used the occasion to honour Superintendent of Police (SP) Sentome Obi, who declined a $17,000 bribe offered by a suspect involved in organ harvesting.

A statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, revealed that all suspects linked to the abduction have been arrested, except for the gang leader who it said remains at large.

Diri reiterated his administration’s zero tolerance for crime and warned criminals to stay away from Bayelsa.

He highlighted recent enhancements in the state’s security infrastructure, including the deployment of drones and the installation of CCTV cameras across Yenagoa.

His words: “We have greatly improved our crime fighting efforts using technology. In the recent kidnap of a serving judge in the state, we were able to get him released unhurt.

“We summoned the security agencies and gave them the necessary logistics. At the end of the day, all those who committed the crime were apprehended except one that is still on the run. Bayelsa State has zero tolerances to crime and criminality.”

Commending the security forces for their efforts in keeping Bayelsa safe, Diri praised SP Obi for his courage, integrity, and dedication to duty.

He described Obi as a model officer who had brought honour to the Nigeria Police and pride to Bayelsa State.

In recognition of his outstanding service, Diri recommended SP Obi for promotion and announced a reward of a three-bedroom apartment and a car on behalf of the state government.

According to him, “SP Obi did not only make the state proud, he also bolstered the image of the Nigerian Police and I urge other officers to emulate his shining example.”

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, also commended SP Obi, calling him one of the most disciplined and committed officers produced by the state.

He further emphasized the importance of sustained government investment in security to protect lives and property.
