NPFL Announce Date For Draws, Fixtures for 2025/26 Season

The board of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has officially announced the date for the Annual General Meeting (AGM), along with the draws and fixtures for the NPFL 2025/26 season.

As stated by the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, the event is set to take place in Abuja on July 28th, 2025.

“We extend our greetings from the Board, Management, and Staff of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

“I have been instructed to invite you to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the Draws and fixtures event for the 2025/26 NPFL season, which will occur on July 28th, 2025, at Top Rank Galaxy Hotel Abuja.”

The 2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 has just concluded, resulting in the promotion of four clubs to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), comprising two teams from the Northern Conference and two from the Southern Conference.

The NPFL 2025/26 season is anticipated to commence on August 22, which is less than 40 days after the conclusion of the Super 8.

This extremely tight schedule leaves the promoted clubs in a rush, with limited time to sign and register all their players.

The league chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, is advocating for the NPFL calendar to align with that of Europe, which disrupts the developmental needs of the NNL clubs.

Hastening this transition poses a risk of relegation for these clubs due to inadequate preparation.

While aligning with Europe is a commendable objective, it should not compromise fairness and competitive balance.

Sustainable growth in football requires a gradual and inclusive approach. If newly promoted teams do not receive sufficient structural and financial support, they may become vulnerable in the league.

The NNL is an essential part of the Nigerian football pyramid, and the pathway to the NPFL must be well-structured and thoughtfully planned, rather than a trapdoor.
