Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has stated that the general elections slated for 2027 will be a serious test of the level of development of the nation’s democracy, saying that it is important for all Nigerians to safeguard the country’s peace, unity and stability as political activities become more and more intense.
Jonathan made the statement in his address to Nigerians on the independence anniversary of the country.
Looking back at Nigeria’s 66 years of independence, Jonathan admitted the various challenges that the nation has had to contend with over time, ranging from economic to social problems.
However, he said Nigerians had continuously shown resilience despite such adversities and had been able to maintain unity in the country.
Furthermore, Jonathan expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, stressing that the country has the capacity to unlock its development potential through better utilisation of its natural and human resources.
He encouraged young Nigerians, especially, to be optimistic and involved in moulding the future of their country.
In his opinion, the success that Nigeria will have in the realisation of its development goals depends on the leadership available at all levels of government in the country.
For this reason, the former Nigerian leader advised political and public office holders to be committed to their motherland and consider national interest rather than their own self-interest.
Furthermore, those occupying various positions of power were asked to do more in tackling the various economic and social problems of Nigerians.
Leaders need to make sacrifices, follow the rule of law, be transparent and develop institutions capable of checking public officials’ excesses.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to nation-building and work together towards creating a peaceful, secure and fair society.
