Nigeria has taken a step towards hosting the 2027 African School Games, after signing an official agreement with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) to confirm Abuja as the host city.
This is the second edition of the Games reinforcing the country’s commitment to youth sports development and continental integration.
The agreement was signed by officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) ANOCA representatives and members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC). The agreement says what Nigeria and ANOCA must do to make the Games a success, which thousands of athletes from Africa will come together for the event.
The NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko said the agreement is a milestone, he said that Nigeria will host a competition that will show Africa’s young sports talents, and the Games will also help countries be friends be united and share their cultures.
Lanre Abari, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee said preparations are going well —Plans are ready for where athletes will compete, where they will stay and how they will travel. The Moshood Abiola National Stadium will be used for the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics events, meanwhile other places in Abuja will host sports, as the Games will take place from August 22 to September 4 2027.
The 2027 African School Games in Abuja will have more than 20 sports and 2,500 young athletes from Africa. Nigerian officials express confidence that the event would strengthen the country’s reputation as a leading destination for international sporting competitions for and also leave a lasting impact on youth sports, in Africa.
