The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed that the name of Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor, has been uploaded on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was disclosed on Monday by the NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson, who, in a statement, said the party had uploaded Obi’s name on the INEC portal while addressing the legal battle over its registration status.
Dickson said the NDC had filed an appeal against a recent court ruling affecting the party, alongside an application for a stay of execution and injunction, insisting that the party remains a duly registered political party in Nigeria.
According to him, the party has participated in all political processes so far and has concluded its nomination processes, with candidates emerging from primaries conducted under the observation and monitoring of INEC.
He explained that the remaining process was the administrative submission of candidates’ names to INEC, adding that the party had been granted access to the commission’s portal to upload details of its candidates.
“My name and that of the Presidential Candidate have been uploaded to the INEC portal, while that of the Vice Presidential Candidate will be done tomorrow upon completion of the deposition. The process is also ongoing for other candidates,” Dickson said.
The former Bayelsa State governor assured NDC members and aspirants that there was no reason to panic, noting that the party was working within INEC’s timetable for the submission of candidates for National Assembly, governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
Dickson also thanked aspirants who participated in the party’s primary processes, saying reconciliation efforts had started to ensure that all those who expressed interest were carried along in the party’s campaigns, committees and structures.
He further called on Nigerians to protect multi-party democracy, saying the NDC would continue with its legal process while expecting the judiciary to uphold the law as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
