Timipre Sylva Resigns From APC, Blames Party Leadership

Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing concerns over the direction of the party and the performance of the present administration.

Sylva announced his resignation in a letter dated August 31, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the APC in Ward 4, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

In the letter titled “Letter of Resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC),” Sylva said he had consulted widely with his family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers before deciding to leave the party with immediate effect.

The former minister, who described himself as a founding member of the APC, said he joined other Nigerians in building the party because of the ideals it represented.

However, he expressed disappointment that those ideals had been “thoroughly and unrecognisably thwarted,” making it difficult for him to remain a member of the party.

Sylva further criticised the party’s leadership, alleging that its leaders had demonstrated a belief that “all is fair in politics” and had consistently applied that principle in practice.

He said the demands of basic decency and morality had been disregarded, adding that the trend appeared to run through virtually every action and inaction of the present administration.

According to him, the current government, formed under the APC, had disappointed the majority of Nigerians, with neither a credible attempt nor any visible possibility of a national revamp.

Sylva said he was therefore left with no option but to “jettison a floundering ship whose fate appears to have been sealed by its irredeemable load of iniquities.”

He expressed optimism that Nigerians would vote in the coming election to “free the Country from this stranglehold” and put the country’s interests first.

The former minister also copied the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the resignation letter, explaining that he did so because he believed the commission had recently conducted itself more as an organ of the APC than as an institution of the state.

Sylva alleged that the EFCC had recently made a “concerted and deliberate load of inquiry” into matters concerning him and his associates, but said he was prepared to take the risk of drawing attention to the issue.

He concluded the letter by declaring: “Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
