The Nigeria Women in Information Technology (NIWIIT) has called for a strategic partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to strengthen cybersecurity awareness, combat cybercrime, and promote a safer digital environment across the country.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by a delegation of NIWIIT executives to the EFCC headquarters, where discussions focused on the growing threat of cybercrime and the need for collaborative efforts to protect Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
The association emphasized that the increasing adoption of digital technologies has created new opportunities for economic growth but has also exposed individuals and organizations to sophisticated cyber threats.
Speaking during the engagement, NIWIIT leaders highlighted the importance of cybersecurity education, capacity building, and public awareness campaigns in addressing cyber-related crimes.
They noted that women and young people, who represent a significant portion of Nigeria’s digital workforce, must be equipped with the knowledge and skills required to navigate the digital space safely and responsibly.
The association expressed its readiness to work closely with the EFCC in organizing training programmes, workshops, and awareness initiatives aimed at educating citizens on cyber hygiene, online safety, data protection, and the dangers of internet fraud.
NIWIIT also stressed the need to encourage more women to pursue careers in cybersecurity and other technology-related fields to help bridge the gender gap in the sector.
Responding, EFCC officials welcomed the proposed partnership and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to combating cybercrime through prevention, enforcement, and stakeholder collaboration.
The agency noted that public education remains a critical component of its strategy to reduce cyber-related offences and strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s digital economy.
Industry observers have described the proposed collaboration as a positive step toward building a more secure digital environment.
They believe that partnerships between regulatory agencies, professional associations, and technology stakeholders are essential to addressing evolving cybersecurity challenges.
The initiative is expected to contribute to improved digital literacy, stronger cybersecurity practices, and greater public awareness, ultimately supporting Nigeria’s efforts to build a resilient and inclusive digital economy.
