Nigerian singer Spyro has sparked conversations online after openly criticising top religious leaders in the country over their response to the worsening insecurity affecting Nigerians.
In a circulating video online, the music star expressed concern about the current state of the nation, saying he believes religious institutions should be more vocal about the challenges citizens are facing instead of carrying on with normal activities as though nothing is happening.
Spyro questioned why many churches and mosques continue holding regular services without directly addressing the fear, violence and insecurity troubling different parts of the country. According to him, religious leaders have a responsibility to speak up for the people and demand action from the government during difficult times.
“Why am I going to church where another message asides what’s happening in the country is being preached. Any church that is preaching any message different from what is happening in this country and not speaking for the people and speaking to the government, you’re wrong,” he said.
The singer also wondered why schools and several public activities are still operating normally despite the tension and security concerns across the country. He described the situation as one that should already be treated with urgency.
Spyro further explained that he initially stayed quiet because he expected respected clerics and religious figures to publicly react to the situation first. During the video, he mentioned names such as Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Bishop David Oyedepo, Pastor Kumuyi, Pastor Bolaji Idowu and Pastor Jerry Eze, while also calling on Muslim leaders and Islamic clerics to address the issue.
He stressed that the country is currently facing serious challenges and added that religious gatherings alone should not take priority at a time like this.
“Now is not the time to sit around holding crusades and services. The country is on the verge of collapse,” he added.
Following his comments, many Nigerians took to social media to share their opinions, with some agreeing with his position while others argued that religious leaders may already be addressing the situation privately.
