The government and relevant health authorities have been urged to strengthen maternal healthcare services to help reduce the growing cases of obstetric fistula in the country.
A Gynecologist and Obstetric Specialist at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ajunwa Christopher, made the appeal during an interview with newsmen.
Dr. Christopher explained that obstetric fistula is mainly caused by prolonged and obstructed labour, especially when pregnant women are unable to access proper medical attention during childbirth. According to him, many women continue to suffer from the condition in silence because of poor healthcare services and limited access to skilled medical care.

He identified early marriage, poverty, poor nutrition, low awareness, and lack of antenatal care as major factors contributing to the increasing number of obstetric fistula cases in Nigeria.
The medical expert stressed the importance of regular antenatal care, skilled birth attendants, and emergency obstetric services in preventing complications during delivery. He also called for stronger public awareness campaigns to educate women and families on the dangers of early pregnancy and the need to seek professional healthcare during childbirth.
Dr. Christopher further recommended early detection of obstructed labour, quick medical intervention, and improved education for girls and women as important measures that can help reduce the prevalence of obstetric fistula and improve maternal health outcomes across the country.
