A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tonye Patrick Cole, has withdrawn from the party’s primary election scheduled for Thursday 22 May.
Mr. Cole made his withdrawal known in a statement issued on Wednesday May 21, saying the decision was taken in the interest of unity, peace and progress within the Rivers State chapter of the APC.
The former two-time APC governorship candidate said he decided to halt his ambition after consulting with members of his political team, supporters and other stakeholders following a recent meeting convened by the national leadership of the party.
He said the meeting focused on the future of the Rivers State APC and the need for stakeholders to present a united front ahead of the primary election and the 2027 elections.
Mr. Cole said he decided to respect the supremacy of the party and step down from the race to promote reconciliation and stability within the party.
He vowed to support and cooperate with whoever emerges as the APC governorship candidate at the conclusion of the primary election.
The aspirant described the decision as difficult but necessary, saying it was borne out of patriotism and commitment to the growth of the party and development of Rivers State.
He commended party faithful, women groups, youths, elders and supporters across the state for standing by him throughout his political journey.
Mr. Cole, however, assured his supporters that he remained committed to the ideals and aspirations that united them, noting that he would continue to work for the progress of the APC and the development of Rivers State.
He urged his supporters to remain peaceful and cooperate with the party leadership to ensure victory for the APC and its candidates in the 2027 general elections.
