The Rivers State Police Command has commenced “Operation Velvet,” a statewide enforcement exercise aimed at ensuring compliance with vehicle regulations and improving road safety.
The operation began on August 17, 2026, following directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
Commissioner of Police, CP Adepoju, personally led some of the checks as officers inspected vehicles and enforced compliance with relevant road regulations.
The police said the exercise is intended to address growing concerns over disregard for traffic rules and reduce road crashes across the state.
However, some residents have questioned the emphasis placed on tinted vehicle windows and raised concerns about the conduct of some officers during the enforcement exercise.
The command has maintained that the operation is focused on ensuring full compliance with vehicle regulations and promoting safer roads for motorists and other road users.
