Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), announced the league’s pursuit of sponsors to fund the acquisition of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) machines for Nigeria’s top-flight league. Speaking at an end-of-season media parley in Abuja, Elegbeleye addressed concerns about questionable officiating that has tarnished the NPFL’s reputation, emphasizing the need for VAR to enhance refereeing accuracy.
Despite defending Nigerian referees as among the world’s best, he acknowledged that technological advancements are essential to support their performance. Elegbeleye highlighted the NPFL’s progress, noting the adoption of communication gadgets in the 2024/25 season as a step toward modernizing officiating. He stated, “The next level now is that we want to advance to the level of having a VAR here.”

However, the high cost of VAR machines and the need for specialized training pose challenges. The league is actively seeking sponsorship to cover these expenses, ensuring that referees, who must be computer literate, are adequately trained. Ten NPFL referees have already been shortlisted by the Nigeria Football Federation for VAR training in Morocco.
In discussions with VAR manufacturers, Elegbeleye explained that effective use of the technology relies on communication gadgets, allowing referees to consult with off-field officials without constantly reviewing screens. This approach aims to streamline decision-making and improve match fairness. Additionally, the NPFL board confirmed that the 2025/26 season will commence on August 22, signaling continued efforts to strengthen the league’s operations and reputation.
