Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich thrashed Auckland City 10–0 on Sunday night in their Club World Cup opener. Vincent Kompany’s side surpassed the previous record for the largest victory in the tournament—Al Hilal’s 6–1 win over Al Jazira in 2022. Jamal Musiala netted a hat-trick, while Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman, and Michael Olise each scored twice against the New Zealand league champions, whose squad includes part-time players such as estate agents and teachers.
Bayern raced to a 4–0 lead midway through the first half, with goals from Sacha Boey in the 18th minute, Olise in the 20th, and Coman in the 21st. Müller, the 35-year-old, added another in the 45th minute, before Olise made it 6–0 in first-half stoppage time. On Friday, Auckland, 13-time OFC Champions League winners, will face Benfica, while Bayern take on Argentine giants Boca Juniors in Group C action.

Meanwhile, UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain made a winning start in Group B, hammering Atletico Madrid 4–0. Fabián Ruiz opened the scoring before Vitinha slotted past Jan Oblak just before half-time to strengthen PSG’s grip on the game. Senny Mayulu added a third, and Lee Kang-in converted a late penalty to seal a comprehensive win over Diego Simeone’s side, who were reduced to ten men after Clément Lenglet was sent off for dissent, having received a second yellow card. Referee István Kovács appeared to lose control of the heated encounter.
Elsewhere, Palmeiras and Porto played out a goalless draw in their Group A opener at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday. Porto’s stand-in goalkeeper, Cláudio Ramos, put in a stellar performance to frustrate the Brazilian side. Palmeiras will next face Al Ahly, while Porto are set to meet Inter Miami in Thursday’s round of fixtures.
