Nigeria’s midfield powerhouse, Jennifer Echegini, expresses her readiness to “make history” as she prepares for her inaugural appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with a strong determination to assist the Super Falcons in reclaiming their continental title, as reported by Soccernet.
At 24 years old, Echegini is heading to Morocco following an outstanding season with Paris Saint-Germain. The former Juventus midfielder asserts that this year’s tournament, commencing on July 5 in Rabat, transcends mere football — it embodies pride, pressure, and the preservation of Nigeria’s legacy.
Born in the Netherlands, the star, who has already participated in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and secured qualification for the 2024 Olympics, is preparing for the vibrant atmosphere and emotional significance of continental competition. “It’s very special,” Echegini remarked to CAFOnline.
“I have participated in significant international competitions, but I am yet to compete in WAFCON. This will be my first experience, and I am extremely excited.” I watched the last edition two years ago and thought: “One day, it will be my turn.” Now that moment has arrived.

“It’s a different atmosphere, a different energy. Representing my country on the African continent is a tremendous honor. The Women’s AFCON signifies history, culture, and emotion. I eagerly anticipate experiencing it from within.” The Super Falcons, nine-time African champions, have not lifted the trophy since 2018. With South Africa having disrupted Nigeria’s dominance in 2023, the pressure is mounting for the reigning queens of African football to demonstrate their capabilities.
“We live with it,” Echegini stated. “The pressure has always existed. When you wear the Nigerian jersey, you are aware that the expectations are exceptionally high. However, that is a positive aspect. It is these standards that define who we are. Nigeria has triumphed in this competition numerous times. As the new generation, it is our responsibility to uphold that tradition. So indeed, there is pressure. But everyone — the fans, the staff, and us — desires the same outcome: victory.
In 20 appearances for PSG across all competitions this season, she scored seven goals, provided four assists, aiding her team in securing a second-place finish behind Lyon in the French Division 1 Féminine. Additionally, she participated in two matches in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. With 11 caps and two goals for Nigeria, her influence within the national team is steadily increasing.
She is widely recognized as one of the most promising talents in African football. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been placed in Group B, alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria. The former champions are set to commence their WAFCON campaign against Tunisia, aiming to make a significant stride towards achieving a historic 10th title.
