Rivers Crisis: Who Leads When Trust is Broken?

Map of Rivers State

As Rivers State battles economic setbacks and political tensions, Vice Admiral Ibas faces backlash over alleged mismanagement. Citizens demand transparency, accountability, and a return to democratic order.

Political tensions and economic concerns dominate headlines in Port Harcourt today as the state grapples with the fallout from Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s suspension and the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Sole Administrator.

The Rivers State Government actively dismissed rumors that the suspended governor and his deputy were summoned by Vice Admiral Ibas, labeling the reports as false and harmful misinformation. Officials urged the public to avoid spreading unverified news that could undermine peace and stability in the state.

Civil society organizations have petitioned the House of Representatives Committee, accusing Vice Admiral Ibas of mismanaging over N100 billion in state funds and acting under the influence of former Governor Nyesom Wike. The allegations have intensified calls for transparency and accountability in Rivers State’s governance.

Economic issues further complicate the situation. Vice Admiral Ibas has publicly warned that failed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) deals at key port facilities have caused the state to lose billions of naira in revenue. He called for immediate audits and stronger enforcement measures to protect the state’s financial interests and boost economic growth.

Social unrest is also on the rise. Women’s groups under the Rivers Women Unite Prayer Group staged protests demanding the reversal of the emergency rule and the removal of the State Commissioner of Police, citing harassment and intimidation of peaceful demonstrators. These protests highlight growing public dissatisfaction with the current administration’s handling of security and governance.

Despite the city’s vibrant cultural and fashion scenes, today’s news focuses sharply on governance challenges, financial stewardship, and social activism. The developments underscore the urgent need for transparent leadership and open dialogue to restore public trust and promote stability in Rivers State.
