Three Dead, 19 Rescued as Boat Capsizes in Rivers State

A tragic boat accident on Sunday evening claimed the lives of three passengers—a young girl and two adults—on a journey from Port Harcourt to Bonny Island in Rivers State. The incident, which occurred near the ‘Yellow Platform’ close to Bonny, was reportedly caused by a sudden ocean storm that triggered high waves.

The ill-fated vessel, carrying 22 passengers, capsized at approximately 5 p.m., leaving passengers struggling in the turbulent waters. While 19 individuals were rescued, the bodies of the three victims were recovered shortly after the mishap.

Confirming the incident, Rivers State Police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko described the situation as heartbreaking. “There were 22 passengers on board the boat, but unfortunately, three lives were lost. The bodies of the victims, including a toddler, have been recovered. Nineteen survivors were rescued alive,” she said, adding that the police had launched an investigation into the matter.

The Chairman of Bonny Local Government Council, Mr. Anengi Claude-Wilcox, also expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a statement released by the Council Secretary, John Gabriel-Pepple, the chairman disclosed that the survivors were immediately taken to the hospital, with the council covering the expenses.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims,” Claude-Wilcox stated. He further revealed that the council is working closely with the police to investigate the role of another passenger boat reportedly present at the scene but alleged to have refused assistance.

“Information reaching us indicates that the boat ignored rescue efforts while passengers from the capsized vessel fought to survive. We urge anyone with useful information about the driver of that boat to contact the council secretary,” he added.

The Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Rivers Commercial District, Israel Pepple, confirmed that the mishap resulted from a sudden windstorm. Both Pepple and Claude-Wilcox urged boat operators and travelers to exercise caution and strictly adhere to safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.

This incident underscores the critical need for improved maritime safety measures as authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
