The police community was on Monday thrown into mourning, following the killing of a newly deployed DPO, CSP N.H. Jega in Delta State by suspected kidnappers who were reported to have killed the DPO in an ambush.
It was gathered that the deceased DPO together with his colleague DPO of Orerokpe Division, CSP Paul, had jointly led their men on a rescue operation of a kÃdnap victim during which they were ambushed.
The incident reportedly occurred around 1: a.m. on Monday, two days after the DPO assumed office at the divisional command. The suspected kidnappers were said to have greeted the security teams with sporadic gunshots.
In the exchange of fire, the new DPO and some policemen were reportedly kÃlled while the Orerokpe DPO narrowly escaped death and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where doctors are currently battling to save his life.
While faulting the incident on poor security intelligence, a security expert, Godspower Ipianeh who spoke with our correspondent also described the killing of the DPO as a sad one as he sympathized with the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force as well as the family of the deceased.
According to Ipianeh, “adequate attention has not been given to security intelligence,” adding that the nation’s intelligence unit is in dire need of expansion and advancement.
You recall that a DPO of Ahoada Police Division in Rivers State, SP Bako Angbanshin was late last year killed through ambush by some cultists who dismembered the DPO’s body and displayed his body parts on social media.
The expert said some persons with criminal records who are being recruited into the security sector these days can also leak information to their criminal friends out there.
“A lot of people with past criminal records that the government recruits these days into the security sector can leak security intelligence to the criminals out there,” he said.
