Hon. Desmond Sunday Stephen, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Okrika Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, has resigned from the party and joined the Action Democratic Party (ADP).
Stephen confirmed his resignation in a letter dated May 25, 2026, thanking the NDC leadership and members for the experience and opportunities he received while in the party.
The grassroots politician and philanthropist said his decision followed careful consideration of his political future and his desire to continue working for the people of Okrika.
He said the ADP provides a better platform to pursue his plans for the constituency, which include improved education, infrastructure, healthcare and economic opportunities.
“I didn’t just wake up and decide to leave the NDC. The decision was born out of the desire to give good representation to my people, who are fully behind me,” Stephen said.

His defection comes as political activities intensify across Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections. Stephen had already secured the NDC ticket for Okrika Constituency before leaving the party.
Meanwhile, the NDC has also faced internal controversy over its governorship ticket in Rivers State, with Alabo Dumo Lulu-Briggs and Blessing Fubara emerging as contenders during the party’s May 2026 primary process.
A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt later dismissed a suit challenging Lulu-Briggs’ emergence after the plaintiff, Kings Unyeawaji, withdrew the case.
Lulu-Briggs subsequently called for peaceful political competition, urging aspirants to allow the people of Rivers State to decide their leaders in 2027.
Stephen’s defection is expected to further shape the political contest in Okrika Constituency as parties strengthen their structures ahead of the general elections.
