Churches gather to seek God’s intervention for Rivers State

Churches under the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Monday gathered at the Methodist Cathedral along Agreey Road in Port Harcourt to pray for the state and CAN.

Their prayers were specifically for God to bring peace and development to the state as well as peace on the leadership of CAN in the state.

Shortly after the prayer meeting, the Archbishop of Port Harcourt Methodist Church, Nigeria, Most Rev (Dr) Sunday Agwu told our correspondent that: “Members of the Christian Association of Nigeria met at Banham cathedral, Aggrey Road to say thank you to God for leading us throughout the year.

“Then we thought it wise to pray first for this state, our governor, his cabinet, his family and for good governance.

“We also prayed for peace in CAN.

“You may not have known that there has not been peace in CAN because some people who were in the former regime still want to remain in office when their tenure has expired.

“CAN was formed in 1976 as the umbrella body, embracing all the Christian denominations in Nigeria.

“So, we prayed that God should restore peace, touch those who are making this trouble to come back to their senses and to let them know that nobody can fight God and succeed.

“You may have observed that we went to the expressway on Aggrey Road and poured olive oil, prayed and asked God to restore peace and prosperity, especially as we round off the year 2019 to enter into the year 2020.

“We are believing God that 2020 will be better.”

On his part, the state chairman of CAN, Apostle (Dr) Stanley Dimkpa said the prayer was necessary because the state governor needs the help of God to lead the state.

The CAN chairman applauded the governor for the developmental strides in the state, admitting that religious leaders have the duty to pray for peace and prosperity of the state and nation.
