Breaking: Community empties as SARS commander is shot dead in Rivers State.

At least 50 persons were arrested on Saturday night in Choba community of Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State following the killing of a personnel of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, on Thursday night.

Gunmen killed the commander of the Etche Command of the police unit identified as George Thomas at a club in the community.

Mr. George Thomas served as the commander of SARS In Emohua local Government Area before he was later transferred to Etche local government area during the last general election.

The reason for the attack is not yet known but SARS personnel invaded the community in over 30 vehicles and carried out mass arrests.

Those who knew said he was a regular feature at both Helena Hotel and Chocolate Night Club both in Choba.

Eye witness told theportcitynews that following the invasion of SARS personnel on Saturday night, the community has emptied with people running to neighbouring communities for fear of being arrested.

According to him: “They (SARS) invaded Chocolate Night Club late at night and packed everyone around.

” They also went into the community and picked anyone that they could find.

“As I am talking to you, Choba is empty. People are on the run for fear of being arrested. This is not like what I have seen before”

However, a police source who spoke to Theportcitynews on the condition of anonymity said the late Superintendent of Police was likely killed by people whom he had issues with.

Choba community has been at the centre of cult-related killings in the past months. However, security agencies have not been able to pin down the crises leading to constant disruption of economic activities.

On Thursday, a man said to be a mechanic was shot dead and beheaded while his girlfriend whom he was with was also attacked by the unknown gunmen but she luckily survived.

Another man standing close to his Toyota Sienna car was equally killed by the gunmen in what locals say was a renewed cult supremacy battle.

The Rivers State Police Command’s Spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, could not be reached for comments on the matter.
