Osun rerun: INEC expresses concern over arrest of journalists, observers

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concerns over reports of the alleged arrest of some accredited journalists and observers at the rerun governorship election in Osun state.

The rerun election is being held at seven polling units, three polling units in Orolu, two polling units in Ife South, one polling unit in Ife North local governments and one polling unit in Osogbo, the state capital where votes were cancelled during the Saturday 22nd September governorship election in the state.

Electorates earlier today disregarded the rain and approached the polling units to express their civic right at the polling units.

Drama erupted when some officers of the Nigerian Police reportedly arrested journalists and observers at Ife-North local government, but other report says they were only denied access to capture the voting exercise.

“INEC is disturbed about reports that accredited media and observers are being arrested or prevented from operating in some polling units. This is being taken up with the security agencies,” INEC said in a tweet.

Our correspondents also gathered that some thugs restricted electorates from voting at ward 1 and 4, but had been intervened upon by security officers as at the time of filing this report.
