June 12: Ogonis Want Presidential Pardon For Saro-Wiwa.

The apex socio-cultural and political organization of the Ogoni ethnic group, KAGOTE, an acronym derived from the four Local Government Areas (LGA) in Ogoni: Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme; has hailed President Buhari for recognizing June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

The President of KAGOTE, Dr. Peter Medee, while reacting to the recognition bestowed on MKO Abiola, Gani Fawhenmi, and Baba Gana Kingibe, advised President Buhari to also heal the wounds of Ogoni people.

Dr. Peter Medee said that for the wounds of the Ogonis to be healed, the President must grant a pardon to Ken Saro Wiwa and the Ogoni 8, whom he said suffered unduly.

“KAGOTE wish to use this occasion of the June 12 actualization, to demand Presidential Pardon for Ken Saro Wiwa and 8 others of our kinsmen that were victims of judicial murder by the General Sani Abacha’s regime.

“KAGOTE also calls for the Ogoni issue to be resolved, the same way the Yoruba issue was resolved as a fall out of June 12.

“Hence, resolving the Ogoni issue requires that concession be given to Ogoni, to produce the next Governor of Rivers State, the same way the Yorubas were allowed to produce the President of Nigeria in 1999.
