As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Government and other relevant Stakeholders have been called upon to increase sensitisation on the negative effects of illicit drugs and trafficking.
The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking came into being by a United Nations resolution on the 7th of December 1987 to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
Speaking on the significance of the day, The President Anglican Youth Fellowship, Diocese of Niger Delta North, Mr. Princewill Ohalem explains that drug abuse involves the consumption or excessive use of any drug legal or illicit to the detriment of the individual. He called for more sensitisation on the negative effects of drug abuse to users, those around them and society.

Also, the Executive Director of Youth Rescue International Development Organisation, Mr. Nature Kieghe, calls on the government to implement more policies that would prevent illicit drug abuse and trafficking, as it has become a cancer eating deep into the fibre of society, affecting both the rich and the poor.
The Assistant State Commander, Drug Demand Reduction Unit, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mrs. Grace Adeniyi, while urging youths to be focused and avoid using drugs as performance enhancers and motivation, also appeals to them to stay away from negative peers or influence that would lead them astray
The 2025 International Day against Illicit Drug Abuse and trafficking has as its theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention”.
