Super Falcons’ Friendly Match Against Cameroon called off

The international friendly between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Cameroon has been postponed. In a statement released via their official social media platforms on Friday night, the Super Falcons confirmed that the first leg of the match, scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne was called off.

The fixture, which was set for today, was meant to mark the Falcons’ return to action following their 2–1 friendly defeat to France in November 2023 and formed part of their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. According to the statement, the postponement became necessary due to the Cameroonian team’s late arrival in Ikenne on Friday evening, which made it logistically impossible to proceed with the match as planned.

Owing to the Lionesses’ travel difficulties from Cameroon to the host town, only one leg of the friendly will now be played. The second leg, initially scheduled for Tuesday, 3 June, will now take place on Monday, 2 June, at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Meanwhile, Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu described the fixture as a crucial part of the team’s preparations to reclaim the WAFCON title.

Nigeria, Africa’s most successful women’s football team, has won the WAFCON a record nine times and has reached the semi-finals in every edition since the competition’s inception in 1991.Cameroon, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the upcoming tournament.
