Davido Hosts Highlife Legend

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, recently had a memorable meeting with legendary highlife musician Bright Chimezie in Lagos, marking a significant moment of connection between two generations of Nigerian music icons. Videos capturing the encounter, shared on Instagram on Monday, showcased Davido warmly greeting Chimezie, known for his distinctive “Zigima” sound, and engaging in a lively, heartfelt conversation that highlighted mutual respect and admiration.

This in-person meeting comes on the heels of a recent video call between the two artists, a moment that was widely celebrated by fans and shared by nightlife entrepreneur Cubana Chief Priest on social media. During the call, Davido paid homage to Chimezie, revealing that his 2018 hit song “Because of English” served as a key inspiration for Davido’s latest release, “With You,” which features rising star Omah Lay. Expressing his gratitude, Davido said, “I got inspiration from your song, God bless you,” acknowledging the profound influence of Chimezie’s work on his creative process.

In the video call, Davido took the opportunity to preview the music video for “With You” for Chimezie, who responded with enthusiasm, describing the track as a “beautiful piece of work.” Chimezie, a veteran in the Nigerian music scene, expressed his deep appreciation for Davido’s gesture, commending the younger artist for recognizing and honoring his musical legacy. The exchange was a powerful testament to the enduring impact of Chimezie’s contributions to highlife music and his influence on contemporary Nigerian artists.

Eager to connect in person, Davido extended a warm invitation to Chimezie during the call, saying, “It would be nice to meet you face-to-face.” The invitation culminated in their recent Lagos meet-up, where the two musicians shared a moment of camaraderie, bridging the gap between highlife and Afrobeats. The videos from the meeting show Davido’s genuine excitement and respect for Chimezie, while the highlife legend reciprocated with warmth, clearly touched by the Afrobeats star’s admiration.

This collaboration of sorts underscores Davido’s commitment to celebrating Nigeria’s rich musical heritage while pushing the boundaries of modern Afrobeats. Fans have taken to social media to praise the interaction, noting the importance of acknowledging the pioneers who paved the way for today’s global success of Nigerian music. The meeting not only highlights Davido’s humility and respect for his musical predecessors but also cements Bright Chimezie’s legacy as a foundational figure whose work continues to inspire new generations.
