Ramadan: Avoid political crisis, Islamic leader urges Rivers Muslims

By Mark Lenu

Following the growing political tension in Rivers State, recently fuelled by a Supreme Court judgment, the state Islamic Leader and Vice President General, Rivers State Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Nasir Uhor has urged Muslims in the state to avoid acts capable of causing political crisis.

The state Islamic leader rather enjoined Muslims to use the month of Ramadan to enthrone peace, equity and justice in the state and country at large, adding that without peace, it will be difficult for Muslims to complete the Ramadan fast.

Ever since the Supreme Court reinstated Martin Amaewhule and 26 lawmakers as members of the state House of Assembly, there has been fear of a pending impeachment plot against Governor Siminalayi Fubara over the rivalry stance between the state executive and legislative arms of government.

In a chat with our correspondent, Alhaji Uhor said: “I urge Muslims not to engage in any political activities that would help escalate or support the crisis in the state and country at large. They should at this time of the year, which is the Ramadan month, promote peace, equity and justice.

“Where they can not enforce the virtues of Islam in the interest of justice and fair play, then they should distance themselves from any social vices.

“Muslims should not engage in anything that would bring crisis to the society, otherwise we might not be able to complete the Ramadan fast. So, Muslims should support the government to enthrone peace.”

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm) and prayer (salah). It is also the month in which the Quran is believed to have been revealed to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

The annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam and it lasts between twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.
