Relief International Africa Commends Presidential Assent to Bill Establishing FUET in Ogoni

Tinubu- President of Nigeria

By Tina Amanda

Relief International Africa has applauded the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for signing into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Environment Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State.

The organization described the decision as a landmark step toward addressing environmental and technological challenges while fostering academic excellence in a region historically affected by environmental degradation.

In a statement signed by Green Isaac, Executive Director of Relief International Africa emphasized that the creation of this specialized institution underscores the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability, research, and capacity building.

The university is expected to serve as a hub for innovation, equipping students and researchers with the necessary skills to tackle Nigeria’s pressing environmental concerns, particularly in the Niger Delta.

However, the organization stressed that while the university’s establishment is a significant milestone, the restoration of the Ogoni ecosystem remains an urgent and critical issue. The long-standing struggle for environmental justice in Ogoniland, driven by activists and indigenous communities, has been fueled by decades of pollution and degradation caused by oil exploration and exploitation.

Relief International Africa called on the Federal Government to prioritize the full and expedited implementation of the Ogoni clean-up process as recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The group pointed out the need for sustainable remediation of contaminated land, provision of clean drinking water, improved healthcare services, and economic empowerment initiatives to complement the establishment of the university.

“The rights and well-being of the Ogoni people must come first, a university dedicated to environmental technology is a step in the right direction, but it must be accompanied by concrete actions to ensure a clean and safe environment where the Ogoni people can thrive,” the statement reads.

Relief International Africa reaffirmed its commitment to environmental justice, urging the government, private sector, and civil society to work together in ensuring that the establishment of the university is matched with comprehensive environmental restoration efforts in Ogoniland.
