RSUTH Resident Doctors Call for Housing Scheme to Address Accommodation Challenges

By Tina Amanda

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has urged the government to develop a housing scheme or policy tailored to address their accommodation needs.

This appeal was part of a communiqué issued during the Association’s 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt.

According to the doctors, affordable housing options will not only improve their quality of life but also enhance their productivity and commitment to providing quality healthcare services.

They emphasized the need for targeted programs that ensure medical professionals have access to decent and affordable housing, given the challenges posed by their demanding work schedules and the rising cost of living.

Additionally, the association called for government support in vehicle procurement for resident doctors to facilitate transportation during emergencies, particularly amidst the current economic challenges.

They also advocated for the introduction of international training exchange programs to expose resident doctors to advanced medical practices globally.

Furthermore, the doctors stressed the need for the domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act by the Rivers State House of Assembly, noting that its implementation would improve the quality and standards of medical training.

In their statement, the resident doctors expressed gratitude to the Executive Governor of Rivers State for the recent employment of new resident doctors and other staff at RSUTH.

The AGM concluded with elections resulting in the formation of a new executive council. The newly elected leadership includes: Dr. Nonju Tamunobarabiye – President, Dr. Egbelekro Homachi – Vice President, Dr. Njoku Bestman – General Secretary, Dr. Wunuh Cyril – Assistant Secretary, Dr. Uzoma Emeka – Treasurer.

Others are: Dr. Nwineh Ambassador – Financial Secretary, Dr. Seleye-Fubara Esther – Public Relations Officer, Dr. Minikwu Chizi – House Officers Representative, Dr. Nimi Ngo Briggs – Ex-Officio I.

The new leadership has pledged to advocate for improved welfare and better working conditions for RSUTH resident doctors.
