Commissioner of Police Rivers State, CP Olatunji Disu, has urged the Nigerian Union of Journalists Rivers State Council, to synergize with the Command for better security services delivery in the state.
CP Disu stated this when he paid a visit to the Union Secretariat at Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
According to him, the reason he seeks collaboration is the fact that journalists play a vital role as watch dogs of the society and fourth estate of the realm.
He reiterated his commitment and willingness to work in collaboration with journalists while noting that he will be readily accessible to journalists.
The Rivers Police Boss said further that he has respect for freedom of information as demonstrated in his earlier place of work as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad where officers were trained to assist journalists in doing their job very well.
CP Disu however urged Journalists to bring complaints against any erring officers to his office, as it will be adequately addressed.
Speaking on the report of the alleged kidnap of a man by some police officers, CP Disu, said he saw the report on social media and immediately swung into action which led to the arrest of the officers involved.
He also said he is waiting for the alleged victim to come forward with his complaint so the matter would be investigated.
The Chairman of NUJ, Rivers Council, Stanley Job Stanley, while receiving the Commissioner of Police Rivers State Command, commended the Police for their efforts in fighting criminality in Rivers State.
Stanley explained that there was a time when residents could not sleep with their two eyes closed, noting that such incidents are gradually becoming a thing of the past as nightlife has improved while urging the Police to put more effort still.
The NUJ Chairman also suggested that the Police should properly screen prospective job seekers to avoid recruiting questionable characters into the police force.
He urged the Commissioner of Police to caution his personnel not to harass journalists while accessing their state Secretariat along Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
He however acknowledged the sacrifice made by Police officers in ensuring a safer society and further assured maximum collaboration from the Council.
Stanley thanked the CP for visiting the Council, noting that he is the first Commissioner of Police who has visited the Union Secretariat.
