Widow loses two sons to drowning in Rivers state

A widow has reportedly lost two sons who drowned in a canal in Akiama community in the Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The bereaved mother identified as Mrs Ogechukwu Thankgod lost her sons aged seven and ten.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Deputy Press Secretary to Bonny council chairman, Boma Waribor, said the chairman, Dame Anengi Barasua was saddened by the incident.

According to the statement, the council boss urged community leaders within the area to show responsibility by ensuring restrictions are fortified around danger-prone zones in their areas of influence.

“The Bonny LGA boss noted that the loss of two children by a widow in one day and in such a horrendous manner was a painful experience, praying that the bereaved mother, Mrs Ogechukwu ThankGod, would find peace and bounce back soonest,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the acting State Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, who also confirmed the incident, said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of event.
