Rivers Judge recuses self from suit filed by Rivers government challenging release of awaiting trial inmates

Tina Amanda

A Rivers State High Court judge, Justice G.O Ollor has declined to hear the suit filed by the Rivers State government asking that he set aside a judgment he earlier delivered which released one hundred and fifty prisoners awaiting trial from Port Harcourt Correctional Contre.

Justice Ollor had in December 2020, delivered a judgment releasing one hundred and fifty inmates after they had spent more than eight to nine years in prison without appearing in court for trial all through their remand.

During the Court Proceeding, Justice Ollor ordered that the case file be transmitted to the Chief Judge of the state for re-assignment, noting that his reason to decline on hearing the matter is personal.

Our correspondent reports that before the order by the court, the counsel representing the state government was supposed to file his affidavit on the reason why they want the court to stay the execution of the judgement.
