Bayelsa: Fear envelops Yenagoa as Businesses, schools remain closed

Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital has not recovered from the shock following the verdict of the Supreme Court on Thursday which nullified the election of David Lyon, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the November gubernatorial election.

The 5-man panel of the Apex Court in the ruling disqualified the APC and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to issue a certificate of return to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Diri Duoye.

Though the commission said on Thursday it will comply with the decision of the Supreme Court, sources within the Bayelsa State government house said everyone is waiting with bated breath to hear from INEC.

Unconfirmed reports say only Justice Mary Odili and one other Justice signed the judgement which was given by a panel of five and as such INEC may not honour such a document.

The national chairman of the APC said yesterday that no one would be sworn-in today as the PDP did not have the vote spread as directed by the Supreme Court.

However, the PDP and governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State quickly countered Oshiomhole, saying that he lacks the power to determine which party has the required spread.

Our correspondent gathered that most schools are closed with pupils and student staying back at home as an air of confusion continues to envelope the oil-rich state.

Our correspondent who moved around the state capital reports that most private businesses were shut while traffics on the roads are mild as fear of the unknown continued to rattle the state.

Also, offices in the State Secretariat complex were still closed as at 9: 30AM with most civil servants remaining indoors.
