NDC Warns Against Judicial Interference in ADC Leadership Crisis

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned against judicial interference in Nigeria’s democratic process following a Federal High Court judgment derecognising the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The party expressed concern that the judgment could create the impression that the judiciary was being used to weaken opposition parties and restrict political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC said it had taken note of the ruling but was concerned about the manner in which some judgments against opposition parties were being delivered.

The party argued that the pattern of rulings, particularly from High Courts, suggested an attempt to prevent the ADC from participating in the forthcoming general elections through legal means.

It warned that excluding opposition parties from elections through court decisions could further weaken multi-party democracy and reduce the choices available to Nigerians at the polls.

The NDC said the situation was particularly concerning under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that Nigeria’s multi-party democracy was already facing serious threats.

Although the party acknowledged the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, it urged the courts to remain independent and resist any attempt to use judicial decisions to settle political disputes or weaken opposition parties.

The NDC also called on the ADC to appeal the judgment without delay and urged the appellate court to grant an accelerated hearing because of the approaching 2027 general elections.

According to the party, a prolonged legal dispute could create uncertainty around the ADC’s leadership and participation in the elections, potentially affecting the ability of its members and supporters to participate fully in the democratic process.

The party maintained that its warning was aimed at protecting judicial independence, preserving political competition and ensuring that opposition parties are not denied the opportunity to contest elections through legal uncertainty.
