Residents and passersby reportedly scampered for safety on Tuesday evening after operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) allegedly fired gunshots into the air during an operation along Nkpor Road in the Iwofe axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The operatives, who were reportedly armed and wearing jackets bearing the NDLEA inscription, were seen at the scene by a correspondent. They were said to have arrived in two vans.
The gunshots were reportedly fired as the operatives were leaving the area with some young men suspected of drug dealing. The suspects were seen handcuffed inside the vehicles.
Sources said the operation targeted a hideout allegedly used for drug peddling, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
A similar operation was reportedly conducted on Monday in the Mile 3 area of Diobu, where other suspected drug dealers were also arrested.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the NDLEA command for comments on the operations and the circumstances surrounding the reported gunshots were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
