Rivers United will look to strengthen their position at the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table when they host defending champions Rangers International in a Matchday 11 encounter at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The Pride of Rivers welcome the Enugu-based side after Rangers were eliminated from the CAF Champions League, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Algerian club MC Alger.
The visitors are expected to turn their attention fully to domestic competition following their continental exit, setting up a potentially challenging encounter for Rivers United as both teams pursue the NPFL title.
Rivers United currently lead the league standings with 17 points from 10 matches, according to the figures provided, while Rangers also have 17 points but have played two fewer games.
The Port Harcourt side will therefore have an opportunity to consolidate their position against one of the league’s leading contenders, although Rangers’ games in hand mean the standings remain tight.
Rangers have already signalled their focus on the fixture, confirming in a post on their official X account that they would travel to Port Harcourt in pursuit of three points.
“Focus shifts to the next battle! The quest for those crucial three points continues,” the club said.
For Rivers United, the encounter presents an important test of their title credentials against the reigning champions. Securing a positive result at home would help maintain their momentum in a closely contested league campaign.
With both sides level on points, the match could have significant implications for the upper end of the table as the NPFL season progresses.
