The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has inaugurated a 600-member governorship campaign council as part of its preparations for the forthcoming election.
The council is chaired by Senator (Ohna) Andrew Uchendu, while Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo will serve as its Director-General.
Speaking at the inauguration in Port Harcourt on Monday, the state chairman of the party, Chief Chukwudi Dimkpa, urged members to approach their responsibilities with commitment, unity and a determination to achieve results.
Dimkpa formally handed over the coordination and execution of the party’s governorship campaign to the council, while noting that its activities would remain subject to the overall authority and policy direction of the state party leadership.
In his acceptance speech, Uchendu expressed concern over what he described as the actions of some political elites who had turned Rivers State into a battleground. He said the ADC was determined to rescue the state from their influence.
He also criticised the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, alleging that governance had been neglected and that the government had failed the people.
Uchendu said the ADC would work towards stable leadership and a system in which the executive, legislature and judiciary could function independently.
He maintained that Rivers State should not be controlled by one individual, adding that the recent political crisis had caused significant damage to the state.
The campaign council chairman urged members to take the party’s message of rescuing Rivers State from godfatherism to communities, wards and local government areas.
He further pledged that the ADC would conduct a peaceful, issue-based campaign, insisting that every vote cast in the forthcoming election must count.
