The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has written to its member associations, including the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), seeking their views on a proposed change to the frequency of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The associations have been given until Wednesday to submit their positions on whether Africa’s flagship national team competition should continue to be held every two years or move to a four-year cycle.
Early indications suggest that several member associations may prefer retaining the current biennial format rather than adopting the proposed four-year schedule.
The consultation forms part of ongoing discussions about the future structure of AFCON and its place in the international football calendar.
However, CAF has yet to announce a final decision on the proposal. The responses from member associations are expected to contribute to deliberations before any changes are confirmed.
A shift to a four-year cycle would represent a major change to the tournament’s established schedule, while retaining the current format would preserve its existing two-year rhythm.
For now, African football stakeholders await the outcome of the consultation as CAF considers the views of its member associations on the competition’s future.
