Rivers United assistant coach Yemi Olanrewaju has reaffirmed the club’s determination to win the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title after finishing runners-up to Rangers International last season.
The Pride of Rivers moved to the top of the NPFL table following a goalless draw against Barau FC in their Matchday 9 encounter in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Finidi George’s side also maintained their status as the only team yet to suffer defeat in the league this season.
Olanrewaju said the team was determined to go a step further this campaign after narrowly missing out on the title last season.
“I think we are prepared, this is Rivers United. The pressure is on us to do well this season, more than we did last season,” Olanrewaju told the club’s media.
He added that the team were focused on accumulating points rather than protecting their unbeaten record.
“For us, we are not even looking at the unbeaten run, it doesn’t really matter. We just want to get as many points as possible,” he said.
The assistant coach also highlighted defensive discipline as a key part of the team’s approach to the title race.
“The key thing for us is not to concede. If you don’t concede, you can’t lose a game. That’s our philosophy,” Olanrewaju stated.
Rivers United will next face Bendel Insurance in a South-South derby at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Sunday as they seek to maintain their momentum in the title race.
