The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will introduce Friday night fixtures as part of a revamped matchday schedule aimed at enhancing fan engagement and expanding viewing opportunities for supporters across the country.
The initiative will commence with the Matchday Nine encounter between Shooting Stars and Ranchers Bees at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan on Friday, October 16. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
League organisers say the move forms part of broader efforts to modernise the domestic game and create a more flexible fixture calendar for supporters, clubs and commercial partners.
In addition to Friday night matches, the NPFL plans to introduce earlier kick-off times for selected fixtures on Saturdays and Sundays as the season progresses.
The revised schedule is expected to provide fans with more opportunities to attend matches while also creating additional platforms for clubs and sponsors to connect with supporters.
Friday night football could also attract spectators who are unable to attend traditional weekend afternoon fixtures due to work or other commitments.
For Shooting Stars, the clash against Ranchers Bees will mark their second Friday home fixture of the campaign. The Ibadan-based club previously hosted Inter Lagos on a Friday during the opening weekend of the season and secured a 2-1 victory.
The introduction of evening fixtures represents another step in the league’s ongoing efforts to improve the matchday experience and increase the commercial appeal of Nigerian domestic football.
With NPFL fixtures traditionally dominated by weekend afternoon kick-offs, league organisers believe the new format will add variety to the calendar and help drive stronger attendance figures.
The first Friday night fixture is expected to serve as a test case for future scheduling innovations as the NPFL continues its push to strengthen fan participation and elevate the profile of the competition.
