Liam Millar Strikes Late as Hull City Maintain Perfect Premier League Start

Hull City edged Coventry City in a clash between two newly promoted sides in the West Midlands, with Liam Millar striking late to prevent a third successive goalless draw between the teams. Despite finishing 22 points behind Coventry in the Championship last season, the Tigers have made the stronger start to life in the Premier League.

Taiwo Awoniyi, who scored within five minutes of his midweek Carabao Cup debut against Plymouth Argyle, once again looked dangerous early on. The new Coventry signing raced in behind the Hull defence and forced Nobel Mendy into a timely block before heading narrowly wide of the post, although the offside flag was raised.

Awoniyi soon found himself in another promising position and this time tested Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who would have been disappointed not to face a more difficult attempt. The Nigerian striker had one more opportunity before the interval, forcing a better save from Tzolakis, but the sides went into half-time level.

Hull had offered little going forward during the opening period, prompting Sergej Jakirović to make two changes at the break, bringing on Lucas Gourna-Douath and Cody Drameh.

The alterations gave the visitors greater attacking impetus, and Mendy soon tested Carl Rushworth with a powerful effort from distance.

Coventry also looked to their substitutes for inspiration, with Brandon Thomas-Asante making an immediate impact. He won a corner that ultimately came to nothing after Bobby Thomas was penalised for taking out Tzolakis.

Hull then missed a golden opportunity when substitute Liam Millar slipped in behind the Coventry defence but dragged his effort narrowly wide. The Canada international would not waste his next chance, however. Following a swift counter-attack from a Coventry corner, Millar kept his composure to slot home and snatch all three points for the Tigers dramatically.

The defeat leaves Coventry still searching for their first Premier League points of the season, while it also ended Frank Lampard’s unbeaten record against Hull as both a player and manager (W9, D5, L1).

Against the odds, Hull maintained their perfect start to the campaign and moved temporarily into second place in the Premier League table.
