Governor Fubara Receives Chief of Army Staff, Applauds War Against Oil Theft

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has attributed the increase in the nation’s oil revenue to the Nigerian Army’s intensified campaign against crude oil theft and other criminal activities in the Niger Delta.

Governor Fubara gave this commendation on Friday July 3, 2026 when he received the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who paid him a courtesy visit ahead of the Nigerian Army’s 163rd Anniversary celebrations scheduled to hold in Rivers State.

The governor said the military’s sustained operations have significantly enhanced security around oil and gas installations, resulting in higher crude oil production and increased revenue for the country.

“The Nigerian Army has continued to play a critical role in protecting strategic national assets, particularly oil and gas facilities, through its operations against criminal elements involved in crude oil theft and illegal bunkering,” Fubara stated.

He noted that improved security has directly translated into increased crude oil output and a corresponding rise in national revenue.

The governor also lauded Lt. Gen. Shaibu’s leadership, particularly his efforts in strengthening security nationwide and improving the welfare of officers and men of the force.

He expressed confidence that the Army would continue to uphold its constitutional responsibilities of defending the nation’s territorial integrity and ensuring internal security.

Fubara described the decision to host the Army’s anniversary in Rivers State as a clear vote of confidence in the state’s peace and stability, despite negative security narratives in recent times.

He assured the Army and other security agencies of his administration’s continued support, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.

The governor pledged that his government would sustain its partnership with the military to promote peace, security, and economic development in the state and the country at large.

Earlier, Lt. Gen. Shaibu said his visit formed part of activities lined up for the Nigerian Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration.
He disclosed that the event would attract Chiefs of Army Staff from 21 African countries, two former Presidents, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other prominent dignitaries.

The Army Chief described Rivers State as a strategic partner to the Nigerian Army, commending Governor Fubara’s administration for its consistent support to the 6 Division, especially the provision of infrastructure and facilities for the anniversary celebration.

He thanked the governor for his commitment to enhancing the operational capacity of the Nigerian Army in the state.
