A political stakeholder and Chairman of the South-South Democratic Movement, Prince Reuben, has urged Nigerians, particularly residents of Rivers State, to prioritise credible leadership over political party affiliation in the 2027 general elections.
Reuben made the call during an interview with our correspondent over the weekend in Port Harcourt, stressing that the persistent influence of godfatherism in Nigerian politics can only be dismantled if voters focus on candidates with proven competence and integrity.
According to him, “what we are practising is a government of the godfather, by the godfather, and for the godfather,” noting that Nigeria is yet to experience true democracy that reflects the will and welfare of the people.
He advised voters to assess candidates based on their track records and developmental capacity rather than party loyalty.
“As a Rivers man, I will advise people to vote wisely. We have gone beyond political parties. Every vote now should be based on the character and competence of individuals who can develop the state and the country,” he said.
Reuben also criticised the current state of governance in Rivers State, describing it as lacking visible infrastructure and effective leadership. He compared the situation unfavourably with other states, citing Abia State Governor Alex Oti as an example of impactful leadership.
“If all governors perform like Governor Oti, Nigeria will be in a better place,” he added.
On the issue of electoral violence, Reuben expressed concern over possible unrest during future elections in Rivers State but called for restraint among citizens and neutrality from institutions.
He warned that actions such as result manipulation, lack of transparency by electoral officials, and interference by security agencies could trigger violence.
“INEC must remain neutral, and security agencies should not take sides. When elections are free and fair, violence will be avoided,” he said.
Reuben further cautioned youths against being used by politicians to perpetrate violence, urging them to reject inducements and prioritise their safety and future.
“Do not allow any greedy politician to use you. After elections, they abandon you while their families enjoy the benefits. Do not engage in electoral violence,” he warned.
He concluded by reiterating the need for voters to support candidates with integrity and a genuine commitment to development, rather than political parties.
“We must vote for character and competence if we truly want a better Nigeria,” he said.
